Gov. Moore Announces Renewal and Expansion of Economic Memorandum of Understanding with South Australia
Governor Wes Moore today joined State of South Australia Premier Peter Malinaukas to renew an economic memorandum of understanding between Maryland and South Australia. The agreement—first signed in September 2019 and focused on collaboration in cybersecurity, small satellites and space—has been expanded to include testing ranges, workforce development, and unmanned autonomous vehicles. Wednesday, May 15, 2024 Alicia Marie Jewell, 38 of Cumberland, was transported from Baltimore County and served two (2) District Court Warrants. The first warrant was a Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation on the original conviction of CDS: Administration Equipment Possession/Distribution and Theft: Less $1,000 Value. For the CDS charge Jewell was sentenced to a jail term of 3-years with 2-years, 10-months, and 13-days suspended. For the Theft charge Jewll was sentenced to 18-months with 16-months and 13-days suspended. Toll House Open For Tours This Weekend
Allegany County Tourism will offer tours of the LaVale Toll Gate House beginning this weekend. The National Road began construction in 1811 as a way to connect Cumberland to the Ohio River and quickly became the main transportation route to the trans-Appalachian West. The seven-sided toll gate house was the first on the National Road after the state took ownership of the Maryland portion of the National Road in 1835. It is the last remaining toll house in Maryland. Guided tours will be offered this weekend from Noon till 4 pm and on selected dates through November.

Maryland Meets Conservation Goal Early
Maryland has achieved a milestone goal for land conservation six years ahead of schedule. The Maryland the Beautiful Act of 2023 established goals of conserving 30% of the land in the state by 2030 and 40% by 2040. The Maryland Department of Planning reports Maryland has already met the 30% mark with more than 1.85 million acres of land conserved. Maryland’s total land area is about 6.1 million acres. The state’s “30 by 30” goal is consistent with President Biden’s executive order of conserving at least 30% of the country’s lands and waters by 2030.
Beall Elementary in HOLD Status Briefly This Morning
From Allegany County Public Schools: Today, May 16, 2024, Beall Elementary School was placed in a brief HOLD status due to a medical emergency. First Responders arrived on scene and provided medical service. School administrators gave the “All Clear” and the instructional day resumed as normal.
Geocycle Says Allegany County Great Location
One of Allegany County’s new industries, Geocycle, is open in the Barton Business Park. Company representative Paul Park was a guest Wednesday on the Dave Norman Show and said Allegany County is a great location for the international company that produces fuel from industrial waste products for their concrete plant in Hagerstown… Geocycle currently employs 11 people with plans to grow that number. Downtown Cumberland’s Farmer’s Market is in full swing for the season. Located on the festival grounds at Canal Place, the market runs throughout the summer on Thursdays beginning at 9:30am.
