Despite Fed Cuts, State Adds Jobs In April
Maryland added 2,300 total jobs in April, according to new estimates released by the U.S. Department of Labor. Employment in the private sector and in state and local government expanded last month, but federal employment fell by an estimated 2,600 jobs, tempering the state’s overall jobs growth. Gains were had in Transportation, Warehouses, and Utilities as well as Construction and Healthcare. The Labor Department reported that Maryland’s unemployment rate increased to 3.1 percent in April.
Lighthouse Parents May Pick Up Students Early
Lighthouse Christian Academy has announced that parents living in flood prone areas may pick up their students early today from the school. Otherwise, the school will dismiss at its regular time.

THEFT ARREST & BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On Thursday, May 29, 2025 at approximately 7:01 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue for a shoplifting complaint. Police contacted the staff who reported that Abree Braithwaite stole items and left the store. Police learned that Braithwaite had an active bench warrant as well. The warrant was issued as the result of Braithwaite violating probation on an original charge of Att-Burglary-4th Degree-Dwelling. Officers later located Braithwaite on E. Fourth Street and placed her under arrest. Braithwaite was issued a criminal citation for theft and transported to Central Booking…
County Passes Budget for Fiscal Year 2026
The Allegany County Commissioners adopted their fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night. The $141.7 million dollar budget is up $3.7 million from last year due to additional costs from the state. Though property taxes remain the same, 10 full-time employees were cut, and water and sewer rates will increase. Income tax rates will also increase, explains Commission President Dave Caporale… “We will have an increase of $0.17 for income tax in order to qualify for over $5.7 million in additional state funding disparity grant. This adjustment helps us secure financial stability without raising other taxes and fees in general fund.”…
American Water Works Company Inc. Buys Bel Air Water Service
The Bel Air portion of the Maryland Water Service has been bought by the American Water Works Company Inc., the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S. Bel Air’s water service was one of multiple systems recently bought by American Water across eight states. Mineral County Looking For Housing Sources
New housing has been a concern for the western part of Maryland for some time. It’s also something that Mineral County in West Virginia is working on. County to See Water Increases
Allegany County Water customers can expect a water rate increase of over 20% for the coming fiscal year. The county purchases water from Cumberland who raised purchase rates by 20%. That raise, coupled with other increases in cost and maintenance means customers may see bills increase up to 26%.
