United We Matter Still Fighting for Maryland State Retirees

The issue of Maryland state retirees losing prescription benefits continues to be fought in the court system, despite what many may have come to believe.  Letters sent to retirees in January stated that prescription drug coverage provided by the state was ending.  United We Matter, an organization that has been fighting against the state dropping coverage, says they have been working for some time to have the benefit reinstated… After unions filed a suit similar to one by the United organization, both suits were overturned in court, although United We Matter says they had won their case.  They are continuing…

Missing Person

The Cumberland Police Department is actively attempting to locate a missing person, Judith Ann Mahoney. Mahoney is a 81 year old white female who is approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall and approximately 135 pounds. Mahoney’s last known location was the 200 block of East Harrison Street on May 2nd, 2024 at approximately 7:20 pm. The Cumberland Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Mahoney. Anyone with information as to her whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Cumberland Police Department at 301-777-1600. Callers can remain anonymous.

STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL BUS CRASH ON I-95 NORTH IN HARFORD CO.

Maryland State Police are actively working the scene of a single bus crash that claimed one life and injured others early this morning in Harford County.Shortly after 6:00 am, Maryland State Police from the JFK Memorial Highway Barrack responded to the scene of a single vehicle bus crash on I-95 in Harford County. Major Power outages in Cumberland Sunday.

Widespread power outages are reported throughout Allegany County, especially in downtown Cumberland this morning. Electrical service in South Cumberland had been experiencing brownouts and blackouts all Sunday morning and shortly after 7:00 a.m. electrical power to downtown Cumberland failed, knocking WCBC studios off the air untill 9:45 a.m. Potomac Edison continues to investigate the cause of the outage that has affected approximately 500 customers, with a number of power lines in the community presently down electrical restoration is expected around 11:30 today for downtown Cumberland and 1:30 for the surrounding community.

MAY 11 WALK TO BENEFIT GREAT STRIDES CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION

Allegany College of Maryland’s respiratory therapist Class of 2024 hosts the annual Great Strides/Mission for Mya walk on Saturday, May 11. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the mile track near the college's Physical Education Building. The Great Strides walk raises funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Mya Harris, whose life-long battle with cystic fibrosis ended in 2012. National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month began on May 1, and Great Strides walks are held across the nation. Public Assistance Requested

On May 4th, 2024 at approximately 8:45 am officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Allegany Street for a reported theft of motor vehicle. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with the victim who indicated that their Silver 2010 Ford Focus bearing MD Registration 7BN2977 was stolen from their residence between the hours of 9:45 pm and 5:40 am. Anyone with information, or if the public observes the vehicle, they are encouraged to contact the Cumberland Police Department. Information can be provided anonymously.

Motor vehicle accident Mount Savage Road

Fire Rescue, Emergency Medical service and Law Enforcement responded to a motor vehicle accident with rollover on Mount Savage Road just before 8 p.m. Saturday night. No fatal injuries were reported. The road was reopened just after 8:45 p.m.  

Gov. and First Lady Justice announce 6 therapy dogs to be placed throughout the state

Gov. Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice announced the next six therapy dogs that will be placed in Communities In Schools sites across West Virginia as a part of the First Lady’s Friends With Paws initiative. The addition of the six dogs to Friends With Paws will bring the total number of therapy dogs placed in West Virginia through the program to 31. “These therapy dogs are making such a meaningful difference,” First Lady Justice said. “It’s incredible what benefits they bring, not just for the students but for the whole faculty.
