Comptroller Lierman Begins Memorial Day Weekend with Tour of Worcester County
In Ocean City, Comptroller Lierman toured the site of the former Phillips Crab House, which is now undergoing renovations to provide housing for temporary and seasonal workers and students. Housing affordability remains a concern for Maryland residents, including individuals who live and work in Worcester County. Between 2019 and 2022, data found in the Comptroller’s 2024 State of the Economy report shows that housing costs in Worcester County increased by 51%, while housing inventory decreased by 70%. Bishop Walsh Graduation Ceremony
Lydia Vassiliadi was the top award winner Friday night at the Bishop Walsh graduation ceremony at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Vassiliadi had the highest grade point average over 4 years and she won awards in biology and Spanish, as well as being the exemplary female student. Duncan Stangel gave the welcoming address, was the Exemplary Male Student, and won the Social Studies award. Kyle Vogtman won awards in math, music, chemistry and physics. Adair Perini delivered the Farewell Address. The commencement exercises marked the 58th in Bishop Walsh history, with the first coming in 1967.
Overnight Road Work On Industrial Boulevard Next Week
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Excavating Associates, would like to notify the public that locations along Industrial Boulevard (near Virginia Avenue) and Virginia Avenue will be affected by overnight construction work on the week of Tuesday, May 28th to Friday, May 31st between the hours of 8pm to 5am each day. Traffic Control will be in place to direct vehicles around the site, during the work. The Engineering Department will issue further notification when any closures or water outages are scheduled and when traffic patterns change.

On April 12th 2024 The Cumberland Police Department responded to a Fraud complaint that occurred at a business in the 100blk of Baltimore St. Investigation revealed that an unknown female suspect had removed a sum of US Currency unlawfully from the victim's bank account while using the ATM at the business drive thru. Video footage was received from the business and the public's assistance was requested in identifying the suspect. It was determined that the video footage obtained was of the wrong transaction and the female that was asked to be identified was not the suspect. The correct footage was obtained and the…
Important Closures to Note for Holiday
Some important closures to note for the upcoming Memorial Day Holiday – Cumberland’s City Hall will be closed with no employees available. Trash pickup will not occur on Monday in the city – those who have trash pickups on Monday will resume on Thursday. All county and state government offices, including schools will be closed for the holiday as well. Emergency services will operate normally.
Pools Set to Open Over Memorial Day Weekend
Swimming pools throughout the area are set to open over the Memorial Day weekend. The Dan’s Mountain pool will open on Saturday at 11am, the Frostburg Community Pool will be opening at 11:30am, and the pool at Constitution Park will be opening at Noon. Beaches at Rocky Gap and Deep Creek State Parks will also be open for the weekend. F.O.P. Calls Out County On Manpower
A critical manpower shortage is being called out by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 144. Currently, just two Sheriff’s Department deputies work per shift to cover all of Allegany County. In a letter released to the media, the FOP is making a request for the public’s support in the allocation of 12 additional sworn deputies for the patrol division. The letter states that the FOP has made numerous attempts to meet with county officials on staffing issues within the Sheriff’s department. DNR Offering Annual Passes for Park Admission and Use
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is making annual passes available as the summer season approaches. The cost is $75 for Maryland residents and $100 for out of state visitors.
