DelFest Gospel Hour Features On WCBC
A tradition at DelFest has been the Sunday gathering for some old-time Gospel Bluegrass. This year, WCBC-AM 1270 will bring the Sunday Gospel hour to listeners live, starting at Noon. Stan Strickland says singer Dre Anders organizes the all-star event each year… “She brings together all the musicians that are there that most of which grew up singing in churches first. They all come together and do a very special kind of gospel performance for an hour. And it’s great because they’re all doing stuff that they grew up with as kids.”
Mason’s Complex Flood Damage
The City of Cumberland saw little problems during recent flooding, but the Mason Sports Complex in South Cumberland suffered extensive damage. Public Hearing Set For Oldtown Bridge Tolls
A public hearing on raising toll rates for the Historic Oldtown Toll Bridge will take place virtually Wednesday, May 28 at 7 pm. Last July, the bridge operator requested an increase to the toll rate for passenger vehicles from $1.50 to $2.50, as well as increases for other vehicles. Individuals interested in commenting during the hearing are asked to sign up by Tuesday, May 27, through the app on the Public Service Commission’s website at www.psc.state.md.us.
Army Corps Projects
Over $190 million dollars for Maryland infrastructure, dredging, and other projects are coming to Maryland through funding to the Army Corps of Engineers. Included is $14 million dollars towards operation and maintenance of Jennings Randloph Lake, $246,000 for operations and maintenance in Cumberland and Ridgeley, and $9.5 million for dredging of the Ocean City Harbor and Inlet to support US Coast Guard missions.
Bishop Walsh Graduation Friday Evening
Bishop Walsh School will conduct graduation ceremonies at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Oldtown Road at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Mass will be followed by the awarding of diplomas and awards. The pastor of Divine Mercy Parish, Father Scott Kady, will deliver the homily. Christian Dowling will deliver the Welcoming Address and Kaitlyn Kutcher will deliver the Valedictory Address.
Ocean City Lifeguards Start Saturday
The Ocean City Beach Patrol will start guarding the 10 miles of beach this Saturday, May 24. The Beach Patrol is on duty every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Ocean City, Maryland.
Westernport Students Will Finish Year at FSU
Allegany County Public Schools announced late Wednesday afternoon that students from Westernport Elementary will be on the campus of Frostburg State University to finish out the school year. Parents will be receiving transportation information soon. Students will have eight days on campus with breakfast and lunch provided in addition to fun activities and scheduled year-end field trips. Their school year will end June 6.
Greene Street Theft and Trespassing Arrest
On Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 200 block of Greene St for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers contacted store employees who stated a male subject had been creating a disturbance inside the store and was refusing to leave. Officers then contacted the male and ordered him to leave the property. He was also informed not to return or he would be placed under arrest. One Million More Travelers This Year
This year’s total number of travelers for the Memorial Day holiday is expected to increase by over one million from last year. Over 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the long weekend. Road trippers lead that number with 87% expected to drive to their destination. One in every 110 babies in the U.S. is born with heart disease, according to Pediatric Cardiologist Matthew Elias.
