The West Virginia Attorney General is determined to see that girls have their own space in sports. Attorney General Patrice Morrisey says he is taking the case of biological males competing in female sports to the US Supreme Court. A federal appeals court ruled earlier this month that West Virginia’s current law violates the rights of a middle schooler born male who identifies as a female being able to participate on the girls track team.  Morrisey says the case could have wide-ranging effects…

The Giant Company’s “Feeding School Kids Roundup” has once again benefited Allegany County schools.  Both the LaVale and Cumberland locations of Martin’s Markets participated in the program that ran during the first quarter of 2024. On Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 600 block of Maryland Ave for the report of an assault. Upon arrival on scene, officers made contact with the alleged victim who had visible injuries to their face and extremities. It was determined that an argument turned physical and the victim had been assaulted by Brian Wade Simmons Jr, 34. As a result, Simmons was placed under arrest and transported to the Cumberland Police Department for processing. At the time of his arrest, Simmons was also found to be in possession of an amount…

On Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Elias James Harr, 44, of Cumberland MD. Harr was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on April 22nd. The warrant alleges Harr failed to comply with an order of the court that stemmed from previous assault and theft charges. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Tuesday, April 23, 2024 Andrew Jacob Getz, 44 of Cumberland, was arrested on a Maryland Parole Retake. He was held without bond until being released to the State of Maryland. Abree Danicka-Nickol Braithwaite, 30 of Cumberland, was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Pretrial Supervision – Failure to Comply. Her original charges include: Attempted – Burglary – 4th degree – Dwelling and Disturbing the Peace/Disorderly. She is being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. Isaac Michael Case, 23 of Cumberland, was arrested on two (2) District Court Bench Warrants for Failure to Appear….

The National Police Bloodhound Association is holding a 40-Hour Training Certification Seminar in Garrett County. The seminar starts Sunday, April 28. Based from Wisp Resort, events will be spread across locations in Garrett County. Over 60 police vehicles from different regions will be in the area. Officers and their K9 bloodhound partners will be visible conducting training exercises in towns, wooded areas, parks, and neighborhoods. Residents may notice an increased presence of law enforcement and K9 units in their communities.

Garrett County Public Schools has named Kaitlyn Bolyard the 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. Ms. Bolyard is a Special Education teacher at Yough Glades Elementary. She has taught for 9 years and has been in her current position for 4 years. Ms. Bolyard received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from California University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Frostburg State University. Bolyard will go on to compete for the Maryland State Teacher of the Year, announced in October.

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department is alerting the public that the McMullen Bridge will be closed to pedestrian traffic on Wednesday, April 24th, through Friday, May 17th. Pedestrians will be re-routed towards Baltimore Street to safely cross over to Queen City Drive. Signage will be in place to direct pedestrians during the temporary closing. Vehicular traffic on the bridge will remain open at this time, but will be reduced to one lane in either direction.

Maryland experienced strong growth in health care employment in March, with the state at nearly double the national rate for adding jobs to that sector in 2024. Monthly state data released by the U.S. Department of Labor shows the state gained 1,600 healthcare jobs in March, totaling 7,400 healthcare jobs since January. Despite healthy gains in health care and public sector jobs, the state’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 2.5% in March, from 2.4% in February.
