Spring Street Closed Monday
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of First Energy, would like to notify the public that Spring Street will be closed off to traffic from Elm Street to Locust Alley between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Monday, 5/19/25, in order to allow them to complete work on their electrical distribution poles. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Traffic is expected to be fully restored after work is completed at 1:00 PM. Baltimore Orioles Fire Manager Brandon Hyde
The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde Saturday as a 15-28 start sealed his fate. The Orioles have been a playoff team the last two years under Hyde but the team is severely underperforming this season. The Orioles won 101 games in 2023 under Hyde but have been easily eliminated from the playoffs the last two seasons. Hyde has been the manager since 2019 and will be replaced by third base coach Tony Mansolino.
High School Graduations in Allegany County Saturday
Mountain Ridge students will graduate at 9 a.m. at the stadium. Allegany graduation will be in the gym at noon. Fort Hill graduation will be at 4 p.m. in the stadium.
Senator Van Hollen Visits Georges Creek Friday
U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen visited the flood ravaged Georges Creek area Friday. Van Hollen visited Midland, Lonaconing, and Westernport. The senator met with mayors, county commissioners, school superintendent Jeff Blank, and library director John Taube, among others.
Governor Moore Vetoes Reparations Bill
Governor Wes Moore announced Friday that he will veto the Reparations Commission bill that called for a study of historic inequality endured by African descendants in Maryland. The veto of a reparations measure by the only sitting Black governor in the nation was included a list of vetoes of bills. The list of 23 bills was released late Friday afternoon by the governor’s office.
Library Update
The Georges Creek Library in Lonaconing is expected to reopen next week, pending the return of water service. The Westernport Library remains closed due to significant flood damage.
Garrett County Child Abuse Arrest
On May 16, 2025, Garrett County School Resource Deputy, Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division, and Investigators with the Department of Social Services Child Protective Services, conducted a joint investigation relating to a child abuse. As a result of the investigation, Willard Lee Humbertson, 43 years old, Oakland, was arrested and charged with Child Abuse and Second-Degree Assault. Humbertson was transported to the Garrett County Detention Center, where he is currently being held awaiting a bond hearing. City Police Report for Saturday
On Friday, May 16th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Shane Christopher Sneathen, 37, of Cumberland, MD. Sneathen was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on May 12th, 2025. On that date, it is alleged that Sneathen failed to appear in court for a previous theft charge. Sneathen was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where he was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond. Portion Of Savage River Road Closed Indefinitely
Garrett County Emergency Services continues to assess infrastructure damage caused by recent flooding in the Savage River Road corridor. A significant section of Savage River Road between Big Run Road and Westernport Road has been completely washed out as officials have confirmed that the Savage River has diverted from its original channel in this area. Also, Aaron’s Run Road is closed due to a culvert failure. Despite the road washout, the bridge on Savage River Road remains structurally intact, though access to and around it remains limited due to road instability.
