Western Maryland Scenic Railroad proudly announces the return of RailFest, its signature celebration of heritage railroading, community, and mountain adventure. RailFest 2025: A Return to the Rails promises a weekend packed with steam-powered excitement, local flavor, and unforgettable experiences for the whole family.
The festivities begin Friday, September 12, with a breathtaking Sunset on the Mountain train departing at 7:00 PM, setting the tone for a weekend that blends history with high-altitude beauty. On Saturday and Sunday, September 13 & 14, the first-of-its-kind Helmstetter Highball rolls—powered by steam locomotive 1309, the largest operating compound Mallet in the country. This scenic excursion operates between Cumberland and the world-famous Helmstetter’s Curve, offering passengers a rare journey through the heart of mountain railroading.
Saturday night at 7:00 PM, don’t miss Burning BBQ on the Rails—our only dinner train of the season pulled by the mighty 1309. Guests will enjoy mouthwatering barbecue from Dry Bones BBQ of Corriganville, MD, paired with scenic twilight views and warm railcar ambiance. In addition to train excursions, over 25 vendors will be on-site at the Canal Place Amphitheater, showcasing regional crafts, food, and local goods. Live music will be featured throughout the weekend, adding rhythm to the rails.
RailFest 2025 is made possible through a generous donation from a Community Service Grant from CSX Transportation. We cannot thank CSX enough for their continued support of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and its community-oriented approach to sharing Cumberland’s rich railroading story.
