Rocky Gap Casino revenue on the Rise

December 6th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Maryland's five casinos brought in nearly $92 million in state revenue in November, its 12th straight month of year-over-year gains, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced Monday.

Statewide casino revenue increased 2.5 percent — more than $2.2 million — from November 2015, buoyed by a nearly 16 percent revenue increase at the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore to $28.5 million.

Last November was the last time the casinos' collective revenue declined, slipping about 0.5 percent. Monthly revenue has reached $100 million four times since 2010, with a record of $104.4 million set in May.

A sixth Maryland casino, the $1.4 billion MGM National Harbor just seven miles from Washington in Prince George's County, is scheduled to open Thursday.

The Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County barely eclipsed Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County, generating just $378,622 more revenue last month. Both brought in a revenue of roughly $3.8 million.

Rocky Gap saw the second-largest revenue increase in the state, about 5.6 percent. Revenue dropped 1.7 percent at Ocean Downs, which has 164 more slot machines than Rocky Gap but no table games.

The state's portion of the revenues is used for education, small business programs, local impact grants and the horse racing industry.
