Stabbing incident at WCI

A 24-year-old inmate of the Western Correctional Institution suffered stab puncture wounds early Friday, according to the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The Cumberland Times News reports the wounded inmate was taken to the medical unit of the facility where he was treated by in-house nurses for injuries that were said to be non-life threatening. He was found injured at about 4 a.m. in the housing tier by a correctional officer. A DPSCS spokesman said the injured inmate is serving a 35-year sentence for second-degree child sexual abuse. He reportedly refused to provide a statement to officials about the incident.

 

An investigation is continuing by the Internal Investigation Division.

The Cumberland Times News reports an inmate at Western Correctional Institution suffered non-life threatening stab wounds after being assaulted by two other inmates at about 8 p.m. on Monday. The 34-year-old inmate, serving a 15-year sentence for rape, received multiple stab wounds to the head and abdomen from a homemade weapon recovered by officers, Gerard Shields, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said. Two suspects were identified and apprehended in the recreation yard incident. The injured inmate was taken to Western Correctional Medical Center. Investigation into the incident is continuing, Shields said.
