Thomas Bernard Finan, Jr. Has Passed Away At The Age of 81

Local businessman and former owner of the Cumberland Times News, Thomas B. Finan, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, April 3,2024 at his home. Married to Mary Kay Finan, parents of two children: Patrick and Kelly. Tom volunteered with Peace Corps from 1967 – 1969 in Bolivia, South America. From 1969-1987 he was Vice President, Business Manager, and an owner of the Times-News, Cumberland’s daily newspaper until it was sold in 1986. A private investor from 1987-2015 until his retirement in 2015. He served as a Member of the board of Allegany College from 1970 until 1994 and was chairman of the board from 1988 to 1994. Served on the board of Mount St. Mary’s University from 1987 to 1994. A member of the Board of Regents of the University System representing Maryland from 1995 to 2007. Serving on the board of the Memorial Hospital and was its chairman in 1996 when Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals formed an affiliation to create the Western Maryland Health System. A member of the Western Maryland Health System Foundation board, Allegany County Library board. Founding member of the Greater Cumberland Committee, Tom was recognized as the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Individual in 1997 and The Greater Good Award in 2017 from the Greater Cumberland Committee.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 N Centre Street, Cumberland.  Inurnment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.
