Triton Construction permitted to begin work at 6AM on Baltimore Street

July 30th, 2023 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public that Triton Construction will begin working each day at 6am on the Baltimore Street Access project starting on Monday, July 31st, to facilitate the performance of necessary construction activities for the downtown project. The contractor will also be permitted to work on Saturdays and Sundays from 6am-2pm with prior written approval by the City Engineer.

Chapter 14, Article II of the City Charter (Noise Nuisances) restricts the level of noise created during night time hours (10pm-7am). This restriction will be revised to restrict noise levels between 10pm and 6am.

The reason for shifting work hours is multifaceted. This revision will permit water and sewer outages to the downtown to occur earlier in the day, so that the outages reduce the effect on businesses. The earlier work hours will also allow the contractor to accelerate the work to facilitate that the project is completed on time, as we are unsure if a winter shutdown will be required. With so many unknowns left on this job due to the deep excavations and aging infrastructure, this accommodation is being made to ensure that the contractor delivers a superior project on schedule.

Building owners will continue to be notified individually when their water or sanitary sewer are scheduled to be shutdown to perform repairs. Press releases will be issued as earlier as possible when widespread emergency or planned outages need to occur.

In the event that the contractor must work outside of the revised hours, the public will be notified.

The Engineering Department will issue further notification when the contractors plans are required to be changed or when traffic patterns must be modified.

Thank you for your cooperation during this time. Please use caution in the area and follow all traffic control devices that will be in place. If there are any questions, please contact the City of Cumberland Engineering Department, 301-759-6600.
