Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will travel to Baltimore on Monday to speak with a conference of National Guard officers taking place in the Inner Harbor – his first visit to the city as a candidate.
Trump is set to speak to the annual conference of the National Guard Association of the United States, The Baltimore Sun has learned. His visit comes amid a controversy surrounding his recent assertion that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a stronger leader than President Barack Obama.
The visit has the potential to create some awkward politics: Trump will be campaigning in a state where the Republican governor, Larry Hogan, has said he does not intend to vote for his party’s nominee in November.
Trump won Maryland’s April 26 primary with 54 percent of the vote. An OpinionWorks poll released Tuesday found Trump trailing Democrat Hillary Clinton among likely general election voters in the state

Republican front runner Donald Trump is seeking a venue to hold a large rally in Maryland after the New York primary on April 19.
Details of the event are still being worked out, GOP sources familiar with the planning said.
Drawn out fights for the nomination in both parties have forced presidential candidates to pay an unusual level of attention to Maryland this year. Ohio Gov. John Kasich campaigned in the state on Wednesday, and Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton was in Baltimore on Sunday.
Trump last visited the state in June, when he spoke to a fundraiser for the Maryland Republican Party.
