UPMC Certified Stroke Center

June 5th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Recently, Dr. Dennis Dey spoke with WCBC about the importance of quick treatment for stroke patients. Dr. Dey is the Medical Director for UPMC Western Maryland’s Stroke Center. He says there are signs people should be aware of and act on quickly…

“Which would be for example, sudden weakness of the face, sudden weakness of the arm, leg, or both.  An inability to speak or see or walk. Then you should be treated at a certified stroke center as soon as possible.”

UPMC’s Stroke Center staff has to meet certain criteria to serve patients as a certified center…

“We get graded on our average time to treatment because time is brain and the rapidity of treatment is so important for our stroke patients that is one thing. The other criteria we have to meet is certain educational requirements for our staff so everybody knows what to do.”
