The following are WCBC's top local sports stories for the year 2021:
 

10.) SPRING FOOTBALL?
In an unprecedented move, 
Allegany County holds short spring football season after COVID-19 numbers start to taper off. The redux was short-lived due to COVID-19 numbers spike.
 
9.) DOWN GOES WASATCH!
Bishop Walsh Basketball defeats #10 Wasatch Academy in Bob Kirk Invitational Showcase at Allegany College of Maryland. Local talent and Cumberland’s own Mikey Allen dumps in multiple 3PTs in win.
 
8.) WINNING SHADES OF BLUE
Allegany and Frankfort have big seasons – for Allegany a resurgence behind young talent in Brody Williams and Zach Michael making playoffs as #3 seed. Frankfort upsets Keyser and rolls into a round one upset of #4 Lincoln 
 
7.) PLAYERS AT THE NEXT LEVEL
Players at the Next Level: Abby Beeman continues to impress at Shepherd University in women's hoops, Luke Hamilton at Towson University, Olivier Robinson Kamwuah at Tennessee, and Jalen Miller at Rutgers. Ty Johnson continues to build his NFL career in New York with the Jets. Averaging 3.7 yards per carry, TD this year. 
 
6.) MEMBERS-ONLY FOOTBALL TITLE
Two Allegany County schools face off in the Maryland 1A State Championship. With their only blemish being a loss to Fort Hill, Mtn Ridge makes their first MD 1A state title game behind Bryce Snyder who controlled the air this year breaking local records for passing yards with over 2300 yards. 
 
5.) FITZGERALD SAYS GOODBYE TO FROSTBURG
After a very successful coaching at Frostburg, head coach DeLane Fitzgerald accepts a job to become the next head coach at Southern Utah University. Former Berkeley Springs head coach Angelo Luvara named interim head coach.
 
4.) TWO LOCAL GREATS PASS AWAY
Dick Sterne and Joanne Nickel pass away. Sterne was synonymous with Dapper Dan, while Nickel was a household name and true winner from Mt Savage in local women’s athletics.
 
3.) LOCAL SWIMMER TO OLYMPIC TRIALS
Daniel Diehl qualifies for Olympic Trials. The Allegany High School freshman competed in the 
100-meter backstroke on June 14 and 50-meter freestyle on June 19.
 
2.) LADY MINERS MAKE STATE VOLLEYBALL TITLE
After a consistent season, the Mountain Ridge Lady Miners punch their ticket to the Maryland 1A State Volleyball Championship. Big year for Coach Val Broadwater and her squad.
 
1.) FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH
After Fort Hill football player Saiquan Jenkins was murdered the week of Homeocming after school off-campus, Fort Hill wins Homecoming and runs the table honoring their fallen teammate, winning their 8th state title. First state championship for Zack Alkire ties Allegany for state titles (8).
