The We Are Fort Hill Committee has announced the 2019 winners of the Deeds, Not Words award, which is given to individuals who may or may not be Fort Hill graduates, but who have given significant service to the school over an extended period of years.
This year’s winners are Paul Donahue, Buck Jankey and Henrietta Snyder. The committee will honor these individuals at a recognition luncheon on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at noon in Fort Hill’s media center. To make a reservation to attend the luncheon, call the school office at 301-777-2570 before September 20th.
Paul Donahue graduated from Fort Hill in 1959. He volunteers his time to support Fort Hill by raising money and donating many hours to special projects. He, along with the help of others, completed much needed work at the Washington Middle School ball field for the Fort Hill girls’ softball team. Donahue also helped to plan and construct the memorial wall that honors Fort Hill graduates.
Buck Jankey is a 1958 graduate of Fort Hill and was scorekeeper for the basketball and baseball team. He is an active member of the Fort Hill F Club where he has served as Vice President, Treasurer, and Program Chairperson.
Beginning in 1947, Henrietta Snyder embarked on a 22-year coaching career sharing her passion with students. As a coach and mentor, she is credited for reviving girls’ sports in Allegany County as she instilled values of citizenship and hard work.

The We Are Fort Hill committee has announced the 2018 winners of the Deeds, Not Words award, which is given to individuals who may or may not be Fort Hill graduates, but who have given significant service to Fort Hill High School over an extended period of years. The 2018 winners are O. Delbert Proudfoot, Dr. Robert K. Poling and Neil, Betty and William “Bill” Smith.
The committee will honor these winners with a recognition luncheon on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at noon in the school’s media center. Reservations can be made by calling the school office at 301-777-2570 before September 8th.
O. Delbert Proudfoot was a 1930 graduate of Penn Aveneu School and became the chief fundraiser for Fort Hill’s extra-curricular activities. For 20 years, Del served as President of the Penn Ave-Fort Hill Alumni Association. He initiated the Alumni Dance, chaired the prestigious “Letter Banquet” honoring all seniors who had earned the coveted “F”, and organized many other volunteer activities.
Dr. Robert “Doc” Poling graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1942. In 1961, Doc initiated a custom mouth protector program for Coach Charlie Lattimer’s Fort Hill football team. The custom mouth protectors prevented injury from fractured teeth, fractured jaws and concussions. He joined the Fort Hill High School Football Medical team and continued as the team’s dentist until his retirement in 1989.
The Fort Hill Band Parent Association gives many students the opportunity to be part of a first class organization. It was implemented in 1937 by a small group of parents, including James and Marie Smith. The committee will honor Neil Smith (son), Betty Smith (daughter–in-law), and William “Bill” Smith (grandson), for their countless hours and dedication that has funded the band program since it’s inception.
