Sandra Burton, the widow of prominent business leader Rex Burton, passed away suddenly on Monday at the age of 81. Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., on March 11, 1941, Sandra was preceded in death by her parents and her husband who passed in 2020. Mr. Burton was a fixture in the local business and banking community for more than 60 years. The Burton family was long active in local businesses having operated Burton's Inc., the Burton's Shopping Center, in LaVale, and Sunset View Real Estate. Mrs Burton helped her daughter shop and organize shoebox stuffers for packing parties for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse; she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland, serving as an elder and on the Worship and Music Committee; and was also a member of the Mary Kay Daily Foundation, Western Maryland Hospital Auxiliary, and supported Rex in his various positions on Community Board foundations. Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday, Feb. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. The burial will take place in Hillcrest Burial Park.
