Woman Arrested on Warrant, Assaulting Officer

May 25th, 2022 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at approximately 5:50 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was on patrol on Frederick Street when he observed Shayna Fitzwater sitting on the steps of an apartment.  The officer knew Fitzwater to have an active warrant for her arrest.  The warrant had been issued as a result of Fitzwater failing to follow the conditions of her probation.  She was originally charged with Assault-2nd Degree. The officer approached Fitzwater, identified himself, and informed her that she was under arrest for the warrant.  Fitzwater immediately got up and walked away.  The officer followed her and Fitzwater proceeded to tell the officer that she was someone else.  The officer was certain that the female subject was Shayna Fitzwater and told her again that she was under arrest.  Fitzwater then fled on foot towards a residence.  The officer was able to catch her as she was attempting to enter the residence.  Fitzwater then slammed the door on the officer’s hand, injuring the officer.  After a brief struggle, the officer was able to place her in hand restraints.  During a search of Fitzwater’s person incident to arrest, the officer located controlled CDS paraphernalia. Fitzwater was transported to Central Booking.  She was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
