WV Jails Holding ICE Detainees Are Over Capacity

Three West Virginia jails holding ICE detainees are over capacity, including Eastern Regional Jail in Martinsburg.  Forty-eight beds were allotted to ICE and the state currently has 75 ICE detainees. Democratic West Virginia Delegate Hollis Lewis of Charleston says the state should be pursuing alternatives to detention to ease the strain on jails…

  

"A lot of individuals are sitting in those facilities because they are suffering mental health issues, and we don't have proper wraparound services.  I would imagine they're probably there for some extended period of time, not only to work out any court appearances that may be necessary, but also even transportation issues, as far as assessing somebody's deportation status."
