City Updating Bike Code For Sidewalks

The Mayor and City Council have updated Cumberland’s city code pertaining to bicycle ownership and operation on city sidewalks. City Administrator Jeff Silka says the update modernizes what was 50-year old language and reinforces that bicycles, skateboards, and electric bicycles are not to be used on city sidewalks…

“What we’re seeing is a proliferation of bikes on pedestrian throughways, sidewalks, going against traffic, and creating a hazard for both the drivers and the bicycle operators. So, what we’re looking at is to try to make our city, which is a walking city and a biking city, safe for both pedestrians and bike riders.”
