Maryland Sheriffs Suing State

Seventeen county sheriffs including Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson have entered into a lawsuit against Maryland over the Community Trust Act. Governor Moore allowed the bill to become law without signing it. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said it puts law enforcement in an impossible position…
“It is an intentional, state-mandated obstruction of public safety. This law deliberately ties the hands of our dedicated local deputies, police officers, and correctional officers. It forbids us from sharing information with federal authorities, and prohibits us from honoring immigration detainers, forcing us to release criminal illegal offenders right back in to the streets of our Maryland communities.”
The group is looking for an injunction to block the law. Wicomico Sheriff Mike Lewis put the blame on lawmakers…
“This is pathetic. That our government, our general assembly – that they have turned their backs on not just the American people, but specifically all Marylanders. Partisan politics over public safety.”
