February 19th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

On Friday evening at  around 8:45pm, Troopers from the Maryland State Police in Hagerstown were dispatched to the report of a personal injury collision on W/B I-70 around the 36 mile marker. While investigating the collision, Troopers determined that a tractor trailer that was traveling W/B on I-70 struck the rear of a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and then proceeded to travel W/B on I-70 and struck a 2015 Dodge Ram Pick Up truck that was also traveling W/B on I-70. This caused the Dodge Ram Pick Up truck to swerve into the median and overturn. The tractor trailer also drove into the median as well. The tractor trailer was hauling metal rods that spilled out onto the roadway of E/B I-70. At this time, a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling E/B on I-70 and struck the metal rods that were in the roadway causing the Caravan to overturn. Both E/B and W/B lanes of I-70 were shut down for several hours. Maryland State Police Aviation responded to the scene and flew one patient to Shock Trauma. The patient’s condition is still unknown at this time. Other patients from the scene were transported to Meritus Medical Center. Their conditions are also still unknown at this time.

Troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. State Highway Administration arrived on the scene as well to assist with traffic control and to detour traffic onto Route 40 from E/B I-70. At 11:00pm the W/B shoulder of I-70 was opened to allow traffic to get by the accident scene. At approximately 6:30am, all lanes of E/B I-70 were re-opened.
