City Votes To Approve CEDC Merger

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve a merger of the economic development agencies of the city of Cumberland and the county, which is expected to lead to placing the entities under one roof. The county commissioners approved the agreement last week and on Wednesday the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation board is expected to do the same. The CEDC, which administers economic development projects within the city limits, was formed in July 2015 by a vote of Cumberland’s mayor and City Council. The concept of merging the CEDC with Allegany County’s economic development department has been under discussion by the parties since late last summer. Like the county vote, last night’s memorandum of understanding was not approved unanimously. Councilman Eugene Frazier voted against the MOU. He told WCBC News after the session that he is not necessarily opposed to the concept- but there are some concerns that he has yet to see adequately addressed.
