Maryland Senate Approves Expansion Of Equal Pay Law

March 26th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

A measure to expand Maryland's equal pay law has passed the state Senate.  Senators voted 32-13 for the bill Friday. The bill would prohibit businesses from retaliating against employees for discussing or disclosing salaries.

It strengthens state law that already prohibits pay discrimination based on gender. The measure would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity.

Supporters say it brings transparency to potential disparities. They cite a study that found overall women make about 86 cents for every dollar a man makes.

Opponents say while they support equal pay for equal work, the bill puts extra burdens on businesses.

The House has passed its own measure. The two chambers will need to address some differences for the measure to clear the General Assembly.
