Maryland’s Unemployment Rate Increases

WBAL reports that Maryland's unemployment rate increased two tenths of a percent in August. New state figures today put the jobless figure for Maryland at 7.3. It had been 7.1 in July. The Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation reports the state lost 2,500 jobs last month. Since the beginning of the year the biggest job losses in the state were in reported in the information sector…which includes online, cable, and telephone. The Verizon strike last month bumped that figure up. State officials are quick to point out that the state continues to compare favorably with the nation as a whole. 7.3 compared with the national unemployment rate of 9.1 percent. “August was a softer month along Maryland’s road to recovery. While the unemployment rate remains 1.8 percentage points better than the national average, there will be a loss of 2,500 jobs in August according to Maryland Labor Secretary Alexander M.
