The WMHS Foundation is announcing a commitment of $1.25 Million to the new robotic surgery program at WMHS. Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery (RALS) is a type of minimally invasive surgery.
The robot is being used in the specialties of urology, general surgery, and gynecology.
The first round of surgeons trained and using the robot includes: Dr. Jason Riley, urologist; Dr. Roy Chisholm, general surgeon, Dr. Michael Stasko, general surgeon, and Dr. Tom Hartsuch, gynecologist/obstetrician.
Robotic surgery brings several significant advantages to WMHS and its patients:
- More precise surgery.
- Less trauma to the body because of those smaller incisions and easier access to the organs.
- Less blood loss, risk of infection, and fewer complications.
- Patients experience less visible scarring, shorter recovery time, and less pain.
- Shorter hospital stays.
- Surgeries once available only at major medical centers are now available locally.
- Robotics surgery is a practice priority for many new physicians, thus aiding in recruitment and retention.
