ACPS Marks Arbor Day Near Frostburg Depot

April 30th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Every year, Allegany County Public Schools commit to an Earth Day community project. Earth Day was Sunday, April 22, 2018.  As part of a collaborative project that took nearly a year to plan and coordinate, the Maryland Department of the Environment's Mining Program hosted an Arbor Day Event on April 26, 2018, to plant wildflowers, shrubs, and trees on a reclaimed abandoned coal mine which was the site of a recent landslide stabilization project located a mile below the Frostburg Depot.

Approximately 125 ACPS students from Allegany, Fort Hill, and Mountain Ridge High Schools and the Center for Career and Technical Education participated in the project.

The students had the unique opportunity to ride the train from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Depot in Cumberland to the planting site. While there, the group planted wildflowers and shrubs to stabilize the slide site. Students then rode the train to the Frostburg Depot where they enjoyed lunch while watching the engine turn around on the turntable.

This event was made possible through funding from the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Bureau of Mines, and STEM funding provided by Eric VanSlyke, Supervisor of Science and STEM for Allegany County Public Schools.
