Archbishop of Baltimore William E. Lori has met with Pope Francis inside Vatican City, where they discussed racial unrest and other recent challenges the Maryland city has faced.

Lori told The Baltimore Sun that Freddie Gray's name was mentioned during their conversation Thursday. Lori asked the pontiff to pray for Baltimore.

Lori traveled to Rome with the director of the Knights of Columbus, the fraternal order for Catholic men, for the group's annual audience with the pope.

Lori says he and the pope also spoke about issues including racial and economic disparities, lack of adequate health care and educational opportunity.

Gray sustained a severe spinal injury in the back of the police van following his arrest April 12, and died a week later. Six officers are charged in his death.
