Barr Releases Mueller Report

April 18th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

United States Attorney General William Barr conducted a news conference today ahead of releasing his redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russia investigation.  Barr provided an answer to the question of whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia … in tampering with the 2016 presidential election:

"That's the bottom line. After nearly two years of investigation, thousands of subpoenas, hundreds of warrants and witness interviews, the Special Counsel confirmed that the Russian government sponsored efforts to illegally interfere with the 2016 presidential election, but did not find that the Trump campaign or other Americans colluded in those efforts."

Following the Attorney General's statement….a number of reporters inferred…that he might be…shielding the president….especially by immediately stating that Trump committed no crimes….and then one asked him….why he felt compelled to make that determination.

"We don't go through this process just to collect information and throw it out to the public. We collect this information, we use that compulsory process for the purpose of making that decision. and because the special counsel did not make that decision, we felt the department had to, and that was a decision by me and the deputy attorney general."
