Board of Education Battling Rising Health Care Costs

The Allegany County Board of Education faces some hurdles in resolving soaring health care costs- perhaps the biggest being union contracts. The school board was forced to transfer $1.5 million from its reserve fund last week to cover a shortfall in the health insurance account- but that was only to address the immediate problem, and does not solve any long range issues. School Superintendent Dr David Cox said there are a number of bargaining units representing employee groups, meaning any negotiations pertaining to benefits and insurance won’t happen until summer…
