BoE Approves FY 2015 Operating Budget

Through a series of budget cuts and dipping into the reserve fund by a little more than $1.5 million, the Allegany County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the FY 2015 operating budget. A number of possible cuts, many of them controversial were presented during a special budget work session last week- and most of those were rejected. The outdoor school program was salvaged and the board dropped the idea of charging a participation fee for athletics. Much of the discussion Tuesday night focused on the desire to keep the pre-K program free to all students. That required taking an additional $75,000 from the rainy day fund. At the end of the lengthy discussion, Board members once again focused their frustrations toward the county commissioners. The county, once again this year provided the board with the bare minimum funding- by granting maintenance of effort.  Board President Laurie Marchini…
