Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority Approves Plans To Revitalize Potomac River Project

Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority executive director Dee Ritchie on Tuesday, asked for, and received approval from the board to move forward with plans to revitalize the Potomac River Project. According to tourism statistics, the scenic railroad and the Great Allegheny Passage have increased tourism for Canal Place and Cumberland- and the belief among many is that a water aspect would only add to the growing interest. The River Project plans, first discussed back in 2009, included the development of a recreation area underneath the Cumberland-Ridgeley Bridge, kayaking, a white water course, boat launches, public access and a riverwalk. Ritchie, during the regular meeting of the Authority, said that there is a significant amount of grant funding on the state and county level that could be used for the relatively minor improvements that would be needed. She says a water themed recreation area could provide a tremendous shot in the arm for the regional economy…
