U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Friday following the pledge between the leaders of South and North Korea to work toward denuclearization and formally end the Korean War:
“I applaud the leaders of South and North Korea for their willingness to enter into frank, wide-ranging dialogue toward resolving one of the most intractable conflicts in the world. The images of Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un meeting at the DMZ are powerful. I am cautiously optimistic this diplomatic door can remain open toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula at peace and in strategic harmony with its regional partners. But the international community has been here before, and we must remain clear-eyed about history and about the wide range of issues at stake when dealing with North Korea. I urge the Trump Administration to play a constructive role in keeping this process moving forward. Finally, as peace remains elusive but visible on the horizon, I will continue to shine a light on the deplorable human rights conditions facing the North Korean people and urging action to alleviate their suffering.”
