Commissioners: Allegany County setting the standard for COVID compliance

July 22nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

While Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has urged local leaders across the state to step up enforcement on health regulations in bars and restaurants-  indications are there are no such problems occurring in Allegany County.  The governor says that while the overwhelming majority of businesses have been following the rules and the safety protocols- it only takes a few to lead to a spike or a surge of COVID-19 . He says local governments should see to it that any bar or restaurant not in compliance should be warned, fined, have actions taken against their licenses or even closed. In Allegany County there has been plenty of social media speculation about businesses failing to comply, but County Commissioners President Jake Shade tells WCBC News that other than the Cresaptown Eagles recently being forced to close its doors, it has not been an issue…

I think someone is wearing rose colored glasses. I don’t go out much but see violations every time I do. Stores not enforcing masks, employees wearing them improperly, little regard to social distancing. I feel going from 185 cases on 7/12 to 233 cases on 7/20 only 8 days later is a pretty good spike. And no they were not from drive thru testing so don’t tell me it’s from increased testing.

      > Hey Toot how about you stop worrying about someone not in a face mask. Besides many don’t have AC and places of employment have no AC. A face mask is not a issue. Pretty soon a vaccine is coming out and you can line up to get a vaccine and then you can breath in the air. Besides go smell the fine fresh air or stay home in a tin foil hat.

Really, “indications are there are no such problems occurring in Allegany County”, and “it has not been an issue”. BS, open your eyes Jake boy, get your bone head out of the sand, you are supposedly elected and in office to represent and safeguard the health and wellbeing of the people of Allegany Co., NOT just the special interests (business owners). You, as well as the majority of elected officials, are weak and gutless in performing your responsibility and obligation to the community in this time of crisis. I have personally observed not only members of public not wearing masks, but workers, not only in retail, but in food service, not in compliance. Keep your eyes open and watch as the numbers escalate and infect and potentially kill your loved ones. If this pandemic is a “hoax,/ one day it will magically disappear”, then why are the republicans pursuing a 5 year lawsuit shield from coronavirus liability??? Think people and WEAR YOUR MASK!!!

      > It’s going to be difficult to get Mr.& Mrs. Joe Sixpack to conform and wear masks when it seems that our local hospital personnel at UPMC can’t do so either.
I do definitely agree though, WEAR YOUR MASK!!!

In my experience Cumberland citizens and stores are largely not in compliance with the Governor’s orders. Social distancing and matters of self quarantining are not happening. I absolutely could name many businesses and several apartment buildings not in compliance, but I’m not the mask police. My comments are here to provide rebuttal to comments made by Jake Shade , and to show that we all need to do a bit better .
Many people around me in Cumberland stating that the president of the U.S.A does not wear a mask so I’m not wearing one either. I heard that statement many times recently from highly educated people and ones with less education.
Are you against domestic tranquility by not wearing a mask ? Is it a human rights violation not to wear a mask ? If your child is not wearing a mask , is it child abuse ?
Is it Un- American not to wear one ? Our preamble to the constitution states that as Americans we and our government are to ensure domestic tranquility. Keeping citizens safe would provide some tranquility . Are you against domestic tranquility by not wearing a mask ? Many questions.
I say it’s simple to wear a mask to show you care about other Americans who may be in jeopardy from this virus. It’s a matter of human decency to protect each other. Have we, as a nation, lost the ability to have empathy ?
It’s a simple mandate from the Governor of Maryland to wear a mask so less people will die. Wear the mask ,virus infections go down , less people will die.
It’s time to show the world just how strong and resilient we Americans can be.
    Unite.

      > Yes, well said, but like their ignorant sociopath President, too many immature Americans don’t care one bit for anyone but themselves. And that is why we can’t have nice things.
