DDC Comments on “Fluid” Target Dates for Downtown Mall Resdesign

During a more than one hour discussion on redesign plans for the mall during Thursday’s meeting of the Downtown Development Commission- the terms “fluid” and “floating” were most often used when it came to deadlines and target dates for the project. The City Council gave approval last year for design plans to move forward which would see the mall re-opened to one way vehicular traffic and parking spaces- but a final design has not yet been agreed upon. Members of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, which is overseeing the project, were in attendance at the DDC meeting. CEDC executive director Paul Kelly said two parking schemes are being looked at- one for angled parking which could create as many as 44 parking spaces; and one for parallel parking which could see anywhere from 25-28 spots created. The hope is final design plans can be in place this summer, and a tentative November construction start up have been discussed.
