Delegate Mckay attempting to find answers about American Woodmark shutdown

April 2nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

With the American Woodmark facility shutdown by the Sheriff’s Department Wednesday, enforcing the latest state COVID-19 directives, some confusion surfaced as to the actual status of that and other businesses. American Woodmark had been operating under the belief that the manufacturer qualified under the state defined “essential” businesses- but after some complaints it was closed. Delegate Mike McKay phoned WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” Thursday morning with an update

How could anyone think that it is a good idea to keep that many people in a closed building sharing the same air? This ain’t rocket science – more people interacting in confined spaces and then going home means a far larger spread of this virus.

American Woodmark will re-open, if not tomorrow, then on Monday.
Some employees felt that they shouldn’t be there due to age or health. They can apply for unemployment insurance and they will receive it.
BUT, as Delegate McKay pointed out Maryland is an at will employment State meaning that even though these employees felt unsafe in continuing to work and that the State recognizes this and granted unemployment compensation, American Woodmark can notify them, at any time, that they are fired.
Is a kitchen cabinet business REALLY essential? Are the hospitals running out of cabinets? I think not.

      I agree MAC.

Kitchen Cabinets are in no way essential. As I’ve said on another post, I hope they convert their manufacturing line to produce coffins. Cause if employers continue to risk the communities health to make a profit we are going to need excess coffins and holes to plant them. Any business without a clear essential function will have bodies on their doorstep buy the time this is done and be judged accordingly.

So now unemployment rose. Wait till someone discovers that American Woodmark is a victim and the county commissioners have to settle with the company and its employees for 200k each employee and a million with the company.

      > 200k? Your’e being ridiculous.

      > American Woodmark is the victim? Really? Just them?

That’s some interesting theory you got going there.

Gov. Hogan and the other Governors are basically following the same list put out by the Department of Homeland Security of what business is essential. I think American Woodmark should be ashamed for putting the health of the citizens of Allegany County in jeopardy. According to DHS they should NOT be operating.

Answer:when a governor completely halts the economy and the company cannot operate to gain revenue, the company may shut down.

Clearly, the company isn’t essential. What about landscaping companies and current construction on building state facilities for example: the new residence hall at FSU which isn’t for extra hospital beds I’m sure.

Typical greedy f-in business a-holes that value making money for THEMSELVES over anyone’s health or life! Hope this company goes bankrupt and never re-opens!!

      > Mark you continually show your ignorance in your comments and foul language in your replies to several articles. Maybe you are independently wealthy and wont rely on a job like the people at american woodmark or perhaps you expect the government to pay for everything.

Is this that hard to figure out someone that works there figured if I get a laydoff I’ll get $430 from the state and $600 from the federal government for total $1030 unemployment. That would be the same as getting $25.75 an hour for staying home or stay here working for $15 an hour and risking my health .goodluck getting some people to come back for a pay cut when this is over.

    • April 02, 2020 at 1:20 pm, Ken said:

      > You do know that unemployment doesn’t continue to pay people when they get called back to work.

Half the time I think you’re kidding but it’s the other half of the time I worry about.

      > Brian is spot on, it is much more lucrative for them to be laid off and collect unemployment with a $600 per week bonus. I suspect WCBC listeners will soon be hearing D&D Motors ads saying “Laid off? Collecting unemployment? Well just bring us your unemployment stub and we can put you in a car today.” They should offer 4 month financing with big payments. Just the $600 per week for 4 months is over 10 grand.

Brian & Bob think people LIKE to lay around on their butts all day BECAUSE IT’S WHAT THEY DO and they think everyone else is as lazy as they are!!

      > Your comment is both presumptuous and incorrect, both common errors of the local riff raff. 50 years ago, government welfare accounted for 17% of local income and in recent years 25%. We can now look forward to 33%.

Well done Brian, I’ve been working since 1968 and never once collected a single unemployment check. In fact, if it were up to me, I’d ban the practice.

Leave it to good old boy Delegate McKay to waddle into a situation and pass the blame. With the plant closure things were going in the right direction, that is until McKay got involved and took Allegany County backwards once again. Thanks Mike!

I’m not shocked at all about this. With his sickening number of kids (come on get a hobby and leave your wife alone) healthcare would be unobtainable if his laundry business had to pay. Delegate McKay is always looking out for number one! Oiliest politician we’ve had around here in a long while.
