The Cumberland Times News reports an off-duty Hampshire County deputy saved a motorist from a fiery, two-vehicle crash early Friday at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Bunny Haines Road near Shanks, according to the Hampshire County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Jacob Crites arrived at the scene of the accident and "immediately jumped into action and pulled the occupant of the burning vehicle to safety," according to a Romney Volunteer Fire Company Facebook post concerning the 3:09 a.m. crash.
The sheriff's office identified the rescued driver as 46-year-old Darl K. Shreve of New Creek, who was taken to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries.
Police said Michael Singleton, 28, of Augusta, was operating a 2007 Jeep Cherokee westbound on Route 50 when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a 2019 Ford F-150 pick-up truck operated by Shreve.
Upon impact, the Shreve vehicle traveled over an embankment and erupted in flames.
The crash remains under investigation by Cpl. Travis Dolly and Cpl. Phoebe Lahman, both of the sheriff's office.
Romney Rescue Squad, Romney and Augusta volunteer fire departments, and Hampshire County EMS and hazmat personnel also responded to the scene.
