Expanding City Tax Base Main Objective with Budget Deficit Looming

By far, public safety takes up the largest part of the city of Cumberland’s budget, with a price tag for the year exceeding $11.2 million. With the city looking at a nearly $600,000 deficit for the upcoming fiscal year, and finances not expected to improve dramatically in the next few years- public safety could be an area to be re-examined. Mayor Brian Grim said the ideal solution to the city’s budget problems is to expand the tax base.
