Federal Grant Allows City To Hire Additional Fire Fighters

Earlier this year, the City of Cumberland Fire Department was awarded $806,316 in federal grant funds to hire eight additional firefighters through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program, which assures that the Cumberland has adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The fire department also was awarded $156,111 through the DHS Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program to purchase firefighting equipment, including a defibrillator and stair chairs. Maryland U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski told WCBC News that she was glad should could play a role in helping the city secure those much needed federal dollars…
