January 17th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney for Allegany County, announced on Thursday, January 17, 2019, that John Pettiford, a former inmate at the Western Correctional Institution, has been indicted on one count of first degree murder, following an indictment return by the Grand Jury sitting in Allegany County Circuit Court.  The indictment alleges that Pettiford killed his cellmate, Tey’qwan Wilson, at the facility in September 2018.

In the early morning hours of September 2, 2018, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was called to respond to the prison to investigate an inmate death.  Upon their arrival, it was learned that Wilson had suffered fatal injuries while in his cell alone with Pettiford.  Wilson was transferred to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy was performed, and the manner of his death was ruled a homicide, the cause being head and neck injuries.  Following the incident, Pettiford was transferred to the North Branch Correctional Institution.

Upon service of the indictment, the Circuit Court will schedule Pettiford’s initial court appearance in the near future.
