Fort Hill Announces New Scholarship

December 11th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Fort Hill High School and the Fort Hill Scholarship Committee is proud to announce the establishment of a new scholarship, which will be called “The Oscar R. and Monna J. Goldsborough Scholarship.” The purpose of this scholarship is to aide Fort Hill students in achieving higher education after high school.

Oscar Goldsborough was born in Cumberland, MD, on July 30, 1931, the son of the late William Mahon Goldsborough Sr. and the late Mary Frances (Swartley) Goldsborough. He was a 1951 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a member of the first undefeated and united football team in the history of Fort Hill football. Oscar, on October 19, 1957, married Monna J. Snyder at the Grace United Methodist Church. He passed away on October 13, 2018, at the age of 87 in Hagerstown, MD.

After his graduation in 1951, Oscar worked for more than 32 years for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration. He eventually retired from his job as a project engineer in January of 1984. After this, Oscar worked as a consultant engineer for ten years. He was actively involved in the Maryland Classified Employees Association where he functioned as their local chapter president. Likewise, he was a part of the statewide board of directors and a delegate to the MCEA convention for a number of years. Additionally, Oscar was a member of the National AARP. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and home renovating. He always attended his Class of 1951 reunions and the monthly luncheon.

Oscar’s love for Fort Hill continued with him after graduation. He reflected on Fort Hill in the highest regard and felt grateful for the education he received while at there. Oscar’s Cumberland roots, friendships, and bonds developed at Fort Hill stuck with him across his lifespan. Although he moved to Hagerstown, his dedication and support for Fort Hill was everlasting. As Fort Hill says, “Once a Sentinel, always a Sentinel.”

Together, Oscar and his wife, Monna, shared mutual thoughts about education. They believe education is the stepping stone of life. Using Fort Hill’s motto of “Deeds, not words”, they established “The Oscar R. and Monna J. Goldsborough Scholarship.” Their love and desire for students to excel in life and education led to the creation of this scholarship. Robert L. Walz, a trustee of Oscar, presented a check from the Goldsboroughs in the amount of $167,000 to establish a fully-endowed scholarship, which will be given to Fort Hill students seeking a higher education after graduation.
