Friends Aware Hoping To Secure Funding For Building Project

Friends Aware is hoping that local elected officials on the state and county level can secure funding for a $2 million building project. A complete renovation and addition to the organization’s Life Enrichment Center on Holland Street is planned. Robert Godfrey, the organization’s executive director, said that renovation plans are in the early stages. Godfrey has asked the Allegany County Commissioners and state lawmakers to assist with funding for the project, possibly through a bond bill. The renovation will include making the building compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The organization offers residential, vocational and day services to people with intellectual disabilities. About $400,000 would be needed to make the building ADA-compliant. Of the rest of the funds, about 60 percent would go to new construction and 40 percent to renovation. The current building lacks a sprinkler system.
