Heroin Task Force Holds First Regional Meeting

Maryland’s emergency task force on heroin and opioid abuse held its first regional meeting Tuesday  in Elkton. The task force was created as the result of an executive order signed last month by Governor Larry Hogan. It is being chaired by Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford, and is designed to come up with ways to address the rising number of heroin overdose deaths in Maryland. The number of overdose deaths have increased from 247 in 2011 to 428 in the first nine months of last year. Rutherford said that the task force won't simply recommend more money be spent on treatment programs, but the task force will look at new and different ways to treat heroin abusers.  He talked about why Cecil County was chosen as the site for the first summit meeting…
