Highway User Fund Increase Could Happen This Year Says Commissioner Jake Shade

For many years, local governments have been requesting the Maryland General Assembly to give back the full amount of money they once got from gas taxes, titling fees and other "highway user" revenues the state collects, but those requests have largely been ignored.  The localities used the money for road repairs and construction. They still get some of that money, which comes from the state's transportation trust fund. But money was diverted several years ago to balance the state budget, decimating what went to local governments. While Governor Larry Hogan has returned some of that money, local governments are getting only about 10 percent of highway user funds they once got.  With the session winding down, Allegany County Commissioners President Jake Shade said that there are indications coming from Annapolis that those funds could increase this year…
