Justice Comments on Effort to Stop Inmate Move to Hazelton

April 29th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Last weekend, WCBC brought you the story that the federal government has a plan to move up to 300 inmates from the DC area to FCI Hazelton, which is less than an hour from Cumberland on Interstate 68. Monday, we asked Governor Jim Justice about the situation and Tuesday, he updated the effort to stop the move…

Local 240 President Rick Heldreth told WCBC that the union has concerns the new inmates may be bringing COVID-19 from the DC jails, and be putting correctional officers at risk. Located just over the West Virginia line, FCI Hazelton has a number of employees from Western Maryland.

I know the BOP is saying that this is safe, that all precautions are taken, etc… Then explain why, of 122+ federal facilities in this country, that 3 of the 10 quarantine sites are in WV? This is not justifiable. Further, the D.C. prisons have enough space; they haven’t followed sensible, required guidelines. Why should the WV population be put at risk because of this? We thought President Trump liked WV. Will he speak up on our behalf? We have one of the most vulnerable populations in the country. That’s why West Virginians have been so diligent in keeping our numbers down. This is no way to thank us.

What about the prison in Gilmer County. They already got prisoners from DC.
