It was announced last October by the Allegany County Commissioners that local insurance agent Craig Knippenberg had stepped forward as the promoter of a new racing series for 2015 at the local fairgrounds. Formerly called The Rock, the race track has been renamed The Cumberland Speedway. Addressing local business leaders this week at the Cumberland Rotary Club meeting, Knippenberg said ironically, he has never attended a racing event. He says his motivation came after the popular races abruptly ended two years ago- as he didn’t want to see the area lose an event that has such a rich tradition locally:
