Cumberland has made the money page on MSN.com, and not in a good way.
In a review of the poorest towns in America, MSN points out that Cumberland and Cairo, Illinois, had median household incomes of at least $40,000 lower than the statewide median household incomes.
The story covers the problems of poverty coast to coast, and points to low educational attainment rates as a major factor in explaining the low incomes in many of the towns.
24/7 Wall Street did the leg work for the comparision, and reviewed median household incomes for every town with a population under 25,000. The analysis was based on social and economic figures in a five year time frame.
