Man Arrested After Robbing M&T Bank

July 13th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

On Friday, at approximately 12:15 PM, a lone male suspect entered the M & T Bank branch office on Industrial Boulevard. The suspect approached the first teller’s window he came to, produced a hand written note stating that this was a robbery, and demanded cash from the teller. The teller complied with the suspect’s request and handed him an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. The suspect took the cash, exited the rear door, and was last seen fleeing on foot toward Oldtown Road.

The suspect was described as a white male, in his twenties or early thirties, 5-10 to 6-00 tall, with thin build, and a thin mustache and goatee. He was wearing a gray colored, short sleeve shirt over top of a gray colored, long sleeve shirt, tan colored long pants, a dark colored hat with unknown multi-colored emblem, and sunglasses to conceal his facial features.

Officers from the Cumberland Police, with assistance from the Maryland State Police, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland State Police Helicopter, “Trooper 5”, conducted a search of the area, but were unable to locate the suspect at that time.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) and the FBI responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The scene was processed by an Evidence Collection Technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

During the initial stages of the investigation, Investigators learned that a similar suspect entered the First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union branch office on Industrial Boulevard/Rt. 51 earlier that morning, and was acting in a suspicious manner. When asked for identification, the suspect left the credit union and did not return. He was last seen crossing Industrial Boulevard/Rt. 51 on foot to Messick Road.

Investigators compared surveillance video and pictures from both locations and were able to determine that the same suspect had entered both locations. Investigators were able to obtain additional information that led to the identification of the suspect. Investigators obtained a search warrant for a private residence on Creek Road, and an arrest warrant for the suspect.

The search warrant was executed by C3I Investigators with the assistance of the Cumberland Police CERT Team, who made entry into the residence, the Cumberland Police, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, the C3I Narcotics Task Force, and the FBI. Investigators recovered numerous items of evidence and an undisclosed sum of cash.

As a result, Investigators arrested 30year old William Morgan Stewart, Creek Road, Cumberland. He is being charged with Robbery, Theft, and Assault.

Stewart was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance, and is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center pending his next court appearance.

Stewart was apparently able to remove the clothing he was wearing during the robbery and discard it prior to arriving back at his residence. A copy of a surveillance photo from M&T Bank showing the clothing he was wearing at the time has been provided to the media.

Investigators are asking anyone who may find any of these discarded items to contact the Cumberland Police, at 301-777-1600, or C3I, at 301-777-0326. Anyone who may have any information about the incident is also being asked to contact the Cumberland Police or C3I. If callers wish to remain anonymous, they can call the Allegany/Mineral County Crime Solvers at 301-722-4300, where callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1500.00 for information leading to a conviction in this case.

The investigation is continuing by C3I.
