Man Charged With Attempting To Elude Police

On Saturday, Cumberland Police served an arrest warrant on Michael Lee Johnson.  The warrant charges Johnson with Attempt by Driver to Elude Police and Driving on a Suspended License. 

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 2, 2018.  In that incident Cumberland Police assisted West Virginia State Police, the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department, and the Maryland State Police with a motor vehicle pursuit that began in Mineral County, West Virginia.  The pursuit continued through Cumberland and ended just outside the city limits on Route 144.  At the time Johnson was taken to the hospital for treatment of nonlife threatening medical problems unrelated to this incident.  It was learned he also had a suspended license. 

Police filed charges as a result of the incident and a warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest.  Johnson was taken to the District Court Commissioner’s Office where he was held on $8500 for the charges in Maryland.  There was also an active arrest warrant through the West Virginia State Police in Romney. 

The warrant from West Virginia was used as a detainer and Johnson was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center pending his next appearance in District Court and extradition proceedings.
