Man Held After Rock Assault

Saturday afternoon, just before 4:00 PM, Cumberland Police responded to the area of Bridge Street and Greene Street for an assault. 

When police arrived they learned an adult male and female were together when Charles Orville Butler began making inappropriate remarks to the female.  A verbal argument ensued between the male victim and Butler.  Butler then grabbed a large rock and struck the victim in the face.  As the altercation continued Butler used a knife to cut the leg of the victim.  Witnesses were interviewed and evidence was collected during the investigation. 

Butler was placed under arrest and charged with 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Disorderly Conduct.  He was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond. 

The Cumberland Fire Department responded and treated the victim.  The victim declined to be taken to the hospital for further treatment.  No other persons were injured during the incident.

Charges:  1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Disorderly Conduct
